We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds include the company’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid and springy layers of pocketsed coils. Although the specifications sound interesting, I have to admit that these beds are not comfortable. Purple Mattress Frame
To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers might like the Purple Premier 4 which provides great cushioning around sensitive pressure point.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Purple Mattress Frame
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Purple Mattress Frame
How Firm are Purple Hybrid mattresses?
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It provides pressure relief and support which can be adjusted to suit any sleeping position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Purple Mattress Frame
Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Frame
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Mattress Frame
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. The best mattress for heavy people might be one of our best. Purple Mattress Frame
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Purple Mattress Frame
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Frame
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Frame
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Purple Mattress Frame
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
A look at the Purple Grid.
The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.
The Purple Hybrid is made up of layers of different materials. Purple Mattress Frame
Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Purple Mattress Frame
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. While it isn’t a major problem, it might make you feel more awake at night.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. I think the Purple Hybrids will be a bit more durable thanks to their innerspring coil layers, but heavier folks especially might want to opt for a different mattress if this is a concern. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Frame

Purple Hybrid Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Frame
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
